The Holistic Counseling Center for Depression in Miller Place, New York.
It isn’t easy to admit that you’re struggling with depression.
It can be difficult to seek help, but sometimes the hardest decisions are some of the most important decisions you can make. I encourage individuals to make the healthy choice of seeking help, rather than feeling the need to shoulder the burden on their own.
There’s many reasons why someone may need to seek out counseling for depression. Here’s a few common signs below to evaluate if your depression is affecting your life more than you care to let on:
1) You’ve been feeling depressed for a long period of time.
Even if there are good days mixed in, there has been little to no improvement in your mood over the last few months / years.
2) You have trouble sleeping at night.
Insomnia is a symptom of depression – your brain not being able to shut off at night means that something is off balance and needs your attention.
3) You’ve been eating more or less than usual.
A change in appetite, especially a sudden one, is often associated with depression. Some people develop eating disorders as a form of coping with their depression.
4) You haven’t been able to concentrate very well.
Because of your depressed mood, it is difficult to focus on other things in your life that are important. You are just too distracted with how you are feeling and can’t concentrate on other life tasks fully.
5) You feel like everything is a big effort and / or feel like nothing in your life is worth it.
This is one of the most common symptoms of depression, and it’s very discouraging. Feelings of sluggishness, not wanting to get out of bed, or exercise, or do the laundry, or clean… there is a lack of motivation on your part that makes you want to ‘quit’ everything.
6) You’ve been having thoughts of suicide or self-harm.
This sign should never be ignored or taken lightly. If you are feeling this way, please consider talking to an outside source to get help immediately. Don’t keep yourself isolated if you feel you are suffering from depression. A counselor can be by your side and help guide you through your journey.
7) You’re pregnant or have a newborn.
Postpartum depression is a very real and serious thing, and it’s important to get help if you are experiencing it. There are many sources to assist in your healthy recovery to be the best you, and the best mom. Take care of yourself – and your baby will benefit as well.
8) You’re struggling with a major life event.
If you are going through a major life event, such as the death of a loved one, a divorce, moving, etc., these events can be incredibly difficult to cope with on your own. Talk therapy can be incredibly relieving, it will help you assess your emotions, your situation, and have a non-judgmental & confidential therapist there for you along the way.
It’s important to remember that things can get better, but you need to decide to get professional assistance to make that happen.
How counseling can help manage / end your depression?
Counseling is an effective means for managing and ultimately ending your depression. A counselor will listen to your concerns and work with you to develop a treatment plan that suits your individual needs. Counseling can help you learn how to cope with difficult situations and emotions, which can help prevent depression from reoccurring again.
