Many people drink. But for some, drinking is more than just a recreational habit.
What are the Signs of Alcohol Abuse / Addiction?
The line between recreational drinking and addiction is not always clear and is nuanced per individual, but here are some commonalities:
Withdrawal. Your body becomes so used to having alcohol that it becomes unable to function without it. When you’re sober, you’ll experience symptoms such as shaking, nausea, vomiting, hallucination, difficulty sleeping, restlessness, anxiety. In rare cases, seizures occur. Withdrawal symptoms will eventually go away on their own, but many people want them to stop as quickly as possible. So, they will simply go on drinking, which puts them in a vicious cycle of addiction.
Other signs can include:
- Wanting to cut down on drinking but never successful.
- Cravings to drink alcohol regularly.
- Spending a lot of time trying to get alcohol.
- Lack of general self-care / basic needs.
- Irresponsible or dangerous behavior.
- Withdrawal from social activities.
- Inability to appreciate the things.
- Legal issues
- Financial issues
- Troubled relationships
- Blackouts
Depression and anxiety often go hand in hand with heavy drinking. Studies show that people who are alcohol dependent are two to three times as likely to suffer from major depression or anxiety over their lifetime. When working on your drinking problems, it’s important to look into any accompanying mental health issues.
Addiction is a chronic but treatable illness that requires a supportive and constructive environment. Individual therapy will give you insight into the cause of your addiction and the tools to effectively manage it. We also offer family counseling or couples therapy to restore relationships and strengthen your support system.
