True growth is being able to witness your thoughts without allowing them to overwhelm you.

If you’ve ever suffered from overwhelming thoughts and struggled to make sense of them all, know that you are not alone…

“There is nothing more important to true growth than realizing that you are not the voice of the mind; you are the one who hears it.”

– Michael Singer

It’s this detachment of ego and witnessing of thoughts (aka meditation) that produces a sense of calm – amid the noise and discord. Simply put, you can witness your thoughts without being controlled by them.

Practicing this ability helps you develop a clear mind. It isn’t that problems will suddenly disappear, but you’ll be better able to determine a course of action once you’re removed from the overwhelm of such distractions that seek control over you. Give yourself the space.

HOW TO WITNESS YOUR THOUGHTS:

When a thought that’s distressing enters your mind, acknowledge its presence. Don’t fight it. You are not giving it power, just acknowledging it. Then, allow your mind to drift to the next thought, rinse and repeat. You must be willing to acknowledge the thought’s presence to dissipate its power. You’ll find that it’s easier than you think to let it flow through you.

Remain still and take no immediate action that is propelled by the thought. There will be adequate time to deal with what needs to be done once your mind is free of distractions. It’s tough for action-oriented people to sit still and do nothing, but doing nothing is actually doing something! Remain still even if it feels uncomfortable. This is part of the process.

Take a few deep breaths… Sit with this silence and embrace it. Be willing to make use of this process whenever you want to return to your center. Practice this detachment and you’ll find that you’re better able to find solutions to your problems, without as much stress involved.
