Recovery looks different for everyone. David Weber & Robin Newman talk about addiction counseling in NY – specifically dealing with couples therapy.
What do you believe would be helpful for couples who are currently active/struggling in their addictions?
In the case of one person in the couple struggling with addiction, often, I recommend seeing someone separately for the addictive piece. It could be me too, but we’d have to discuss it as a team, because one spouse may feel like there is a ‘ganging up’ or something.
Some of the additional techniques (besides talk therapy) that we may use with treating addiction is DBT (dialect behavioral therapy), mindfulness meditation, motivation, ear acupuncture and more.
There’s a lot of data coming out of the Lincoln Center in the Bronx, NYC that shows how ear acupuncture works really really well with people all across the addiction landscape: such as addiction to cigarettes, alcohol, marijuana, gambling, etc.
The main caveat with addiction therapy is that the person wants to stop their addictive behavior. This is a very important thing to take into consideration, especially if you are the spouse/friend/family member of someone else struggling with an addiction.
